In this course we will read poems in English together in order to develop skills that will help you read poetry on your own. We will read poems from various periods and forms and ask basic questions that will enable us to make sense of poems and develop interpretations of them. We will look at matters of form such as stanzas, rhyme, rhythm, metaphor, and meter. We will look at genres of poems as a means to discern meaning. We will look for the emotional and intellectual motives from which poems emerge.
